Democracyworks is the Educational Theatre Association of Canada's student essay competition. The program was founded Internationally in 2009 to support and grow student advocacy on behalf of theatre and other arts education. Since then, hundreds of students have written essays on topics ranging from the importance of diversity to the value of theatre education in a democratic society. Each year's winner has their essay published in the EdTA Canada National Newsletter. It is also send to prominent Teachers' Unions and the various Ministry's of Education across Canada's 13 Provinces and Territories. We also help facilitate a meeting between the student and their provincial MLA and/or Member of Parliament in Ottawa Ontario to talk about the value of arts education. The winning essayist will also receive a cash prize of $200 CDN. The first runner-up essayist will be awarded $100 CDN, and second runner-up $50 CDN. Learn more and submit an application.
